George Albert Taber was born in Springport, New York, on January 3, 1853, the son of Stephen Taber and Mary Maria Smith. In 1875, he began studying homeopathy at the University of Michigan; he graduated with an M.D. in 1877 and became an assistant professor of materia medica at the university.
